Oil Change Myths That Cost You Money
The auto industry has changed a lot in 30 years. Your oil change habits probably haven't. Let's clear up a few expensive myths.
Myth 1: Change your oil every 3,000 miles. Modern engines and modern oils don't need this. Most manufacturers spec 5,000-10,000 miles depending on driving conditions. Check your owner's manual — not the windshield sticker the last shop put on.
Myth 2: Synthetic oil is always worth the upgrade. Synthetic is great for high-performance, turbocharged, or extreme-temperature vehicles. For a normal commuter that gets serviced on time, conventional oil works fine if the manufacturer allows it.
Myth 3: You need an oil flush. Almost never. Flushes can dislodge sludge that then clogs oil passages. Just stick to the service interval.
Myth 4: Dark oil means it's worn out. Oil darkens as it does its job — suspending contaminants. Color is not a reliable indicator. Time and mileage are.
