Check Engine Light Just Came On — Now What?
A check engine light (CEL) covers hundreds of possible issues — from a loose gas cap to a failing catalytic converter. Here's how to respond.
If the light is SOLID: it's a non-critical fault. You can keep driving for now, but get it scanned within a week. Continued driving with an unresolved code can damage other components.
If the light is FLASHING: pull over safely and stop driving. A flashing CEL means active engine misfire — every mile you drive is dumping raw fuel into your catalytic converter and destroying it.
Step 1: Check your gas cap. Make sure it's tight and clicked. A loose cap is the #1 cause of mystery CELs.
Step 2: Get the code read. Most chain auto-parts stores will scan it for free, but they often try to upsell parts based on the code. A code is a starting point, not a diagnosis.
Step 3: Get a real diagnostic. A code like 'P0300 — random misfire' has dozens of possible causes. We do real diagnostics — scan, live data, visual inspection, and a written report — for FREE.
